Avalon Waterways to add India cruise tours in 2019
Avalon Waterways fans soon will be able to go to India with the company.
The Colorado-based river line has unveiled plans for cruise tours to India starting in 2019.
The 13-day Colorful India and the Ganges River trips will begin with a multi-day overland tour to India’s capital, Delhi, as well as Agra (home to the Taj Mahal) and Jaipur — a trio of historic cities known as the Golden Triangle. It’ll then continue with a seven-night voyage on a tributary of the Ganges River.
The cruise portion of the trip will begin in Kolkata and feature stops in a diverse range of off-the-beaten-path destinations along the Ganges tributary known as the Hooghly.
Highlights of the voyage will include a visit to Kalna, known for muslin weaving, and historic Murshidabad. Passengers also will have the chance to explore the Hare Krishna headquarters in Mayapur.
Avalon will offer seven departures of the itinerary in February, September, October and November of 2019 with fares starting at $5,559 per person.
The cruise portion of the itinerary will take place on the 56-passenger Ganges Voyager, a three-year-old vessel that Avalon is chartering. Ganges cruises on the ship have been sold in the past by Vantage Deluxe World Travel, a Boston-based tour company.
Avalon is following Vantage, G Adventures and river line Uniworld in launching cruise tours to India aimed at the American market.
While the bulk of Avalon’s cruise offerings are in Europe, the line in recent years has begun branching out to other destinations including Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. The company just added Myanmar trips in 2015.
